What Medigap Plan will you choose?
In Utah and other states, people have the freedom to choose their health and prescription drug coverage. One option that is administered by the Federal Government is Original Medicare. This option provides Part A coverage which takes care of in-patient and specialized care as well as Part B coverage which takes care of doctors visits and other types of outpatient care.
There is the option of adding drug coverage to a Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. Medicare Supplement Insurance or Medigap policies are sold by private insurance companies in order to fill the gaps in Part A and Part B coverage. This includes costs such as deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments. There are also Medigap policies that cover some of the costs that Original Medicare does not cover.
Medigap policies do not work with any other kind of health insurance; they do not work with TRICARE, Medicare Advantage Plans, Veterans Administration (VA) benefits or union and employer-union group coverage.
Medicare Advantage plans such as PPO and HMO that are run by private insurance companies provide Part A and B coverage but they can charge different amounts for different services. These policies may provide additional coverage and prescription drug coverage at an extra cost. The cost of services and items differ according to the plan. In most cases, drug coverage can be obtained through the plan you have without a Medigap policy. In Utah, if you have Medicare A&B, you can buy a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medicare Supplement.
