Z-West Insurance is your Utah Medicare information resource. Our specially trained team is dedicated to helping you make the most of your Medicare coverage as well as finding you the best Utah Medicare supplement for your lifestyle and budget. This month’s featured Medicare coverage are the glaucoma screenings and diabetes services.

Glaucoma Screenings

Your Medicare Part B (Medical insurance) covers annual glaucoma for people with a higher risk. Diabetes can greatly increase your risk of glaucoma so being tested regularly is always in your best interest. Additionally, if you have a family history of glaucoma, are African American, Hispanic American, and 50 or older. You may be required to pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount and the Part B deductible if you choose to participate in these encouraged services. There could also be a copayment if hospital outpatient services are necessary.

Diabetes Screenings and Supplies

Diabetes affects millions of people–many don’t even know they have it. But if you are at a high risk for developing diabetes (you have a family history, are overweight, have high blood sugar or cholesterol) Medicare covers at least two fasting blood glucose tests each year at no charge to you. In addition, Medicare covers blood sugar test strips, monitors, control solutions and even therapeutic shoes. You may be required to pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount for these supplies. In an effort to educate people about diabetes, Medicare also covers self-management training to help you learn how to monitor blood sugar, control your diet and exercise, and manage your prescriptions.
